Canela Margarita

This has become my favorite seasonal drink.  For the past two Thanksgivings, I have made this drink at Friendsgiving and it is a hit with everyone, regardless of what they usually drink.  I think the cinnamon adds a bit of warmth that is sometimes missing during this time of year:  Warmth for the body and the soul during these colder, darker days of winter.

Ingredients:
EspolΓ³n Tequila Blanco
3-5 cinnamon sticks
Triple sec (optional)
ruby red grapefruits
limes

Preparation:

***About 4 days before you plan on drinking this cocktail, you need to infuse the tequila with the cinnamon sticks, per below:

Pour the tequila into a medium bowl.   Add the cinnamon sticks and cover for 4 days.  You can leave this bowl out on the counter.  Occasionally over the four days, give the bowl a little swirl.  After the 4 days, remove the cinnamon sticks and use a funnel to pour the infused tequila back into the bottle.  (You can also add the cinnamon sticks directly into the bottle to infuse the tequila, but they may unroll a little bit while they're in there and may not come back out of the bottle.  Then you'll have your very own cinnamon ship in a bottle - ha!)

When you're ready to make the cocktail, proceed as follows:

Fill a rocks glass with ice.

Add:

  • a shot or so of the tequila
  • a bit more than a splash of triple sec (optional)
  • the juice of 1/2 a ruby red grapefruit
  • the juice of 1/2 a lime
  • stir and serve

On a side note, this cinnamon infused tequila is also lovely as a nightcap:  just pour a little over ice and enjoy!
